Angling The Arabian
Sea
By Rafiki Yako
Special Correspondent
As the day progressed, events occurred that made
each moment distinctly different. Midmorning a dense mist fell over
the mountains, draping them in a rather mysterious and beautiful
shroud. Later in the day, dark, heavy clouds hovered above, but
as it rarely rains in Oman, we did not find their presence disconcerting.
In the afternoon, all the sea gulls in the neighborhood came begging
for food. The captain caught a few and fed them small pieces of
fish, then let them go. Wild birds, they appeared tame in his hands,
which amazed us. Although I kept expecting there to be flies or
other insects, remarkably, we only saw one fly during the entire
day, which made the heavy coating of insect repellant we were wearing
redundant. As the sun began to set, and the moonrise became clear,
fish began to bite vigorously once more. We worked hard for the
last hour before returning to port, catching a huge number of fish,
impressing the captain by filling his cooler.
